Upon arriving in Sicily we came to found that our luggage was lost and our rental car wasn’t secured. After a few extra hours of sorting everything out we made the drive to my families house in Bolognetta (25min outside of Palermo). We immediately were fed Pasta Norma, veal, fruit, and pastries. Rose and Frank La Duca were great hosts and although they couldn’t speak English and my Italian is terrible we made do. Their friends Stella & Peter came to help since Stella spoke english. They took us to another relatives house where we all sat around a dining room table, exchanged pictures of the family, and ate Gelato cake. They ecstatically talked about how my grandfather stayed in that very house when he came to visit in the 60’s and how great it is to have me there now. Next, we headed to Frank’s country house for a view of the countryside. They had several acres of land with vineyards and olive trees. Simply beautiful. We were invited for pizza with the family that night which was spectacular. The next day Frank, Rose, Stella, and Peter scooped us up in Palermo and took us to some amazing Churches. Afterward we went back to their house for lunch (pasta, veal, sausage, olives, cheese, fruit, & pastries). We left them for Agrigento in the late afternoon and said our goodbyes as we rolled to the car. It was great returning to my roots and finding my relatives. It made the trip all worth it at that point.
